Arville Puström-Uus (1921-2014), originally from Tallinn, began studying art under Elmar Kits and Juhan Nõmmik at Pallas, but her studies were interrupted by the war. She received a diploma as a painter as a refugee from the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts (1946-1949), after which she moved to the USA, where she mainly painted landscapes and flowers.

This view of a summer in Estonia is imbued with nostalgia and longing for the homeland – after all, both home and her loved ones were left behind. Artist Mauri Gross has called it “romantic naivety”, the fruit of artistic freedom, symbolism and the subconscious. A farmyard lined with trees, with lush flowers growing and a housewife busy with chores, is a clear allusion to the good old days of Estonia.
