Artist Voldemar Kangro-Pool (1889-1943) was the brother of the well-known literary and art critic Rasmus Kangro-Pool. He studied art in Kristjan Raud’s studio before World War I, then in Munich and Paris. In the 1910s and 1920s, he was known mainly for his characterful portraits and drawings dealing with symbolic, erotic and apocalyptic themes.

In the 1930s, when the general development of art was moving towards a more traditional direction, Kangro-Pool also turned to this style. The painting before you presents one of the artist’s most charming aspects in landscape painting – the special glow of water. Very often, he paints it in the same tone as the sky and so it is here, where only the forest strip visible on the other side of the lake draws a clear line between the two.
