Artist Vello Vinn (b. 1939) from Saaremaa is known as a creator of fantastical yet realistically inspired etchings built on the principle of symmetry. His work has been influenced by renowned surrealists Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, etc., whose boundless flights of thought can also be seen within Vinn’s prints.
Already in the 1970s, he used photographs and repeated motifs in his graphic works. The ambiguous symbol of a parachutist can also be seen in one of Vinn’s best-known works from his early creative period, “Cat” (1968, Art Museum of Estonia). The metaphor of looking down at the ground from a bird’s-eye view, seeing a broader perspective (and traveling in general) speaks of the artist’s intense thought process, of going deeper than simply depicting the obviously visible. The print invites us to take a leap into the future, into what we do not yet know; to dare to take risks and make mistakes; to get drunk and fly, to love.
