Vello Trell, who first emerged in the young Estonian painting scene in the 1980s, was one of those artists whose paintings always contained philosophical tension and visible thought. “Thinking on a blue chair” also perfectly fits into this specific category of works in the artist’s portfolio.

A man, in a deeply introspective mood, has sat down on a chair and is debating: “Was it Tuesday or Wednesday? When did that tree catch fire? And how did half of my jacket turn blue?” But Trell does not give the answers in advance, he instead invites the viewer to discuss and fantasize for themselves.
