Abstract paintings with a Cubist feel and high-level figural compositions appeared in the work of Varmo Pirk (1913-1980) as early as the 1960s – a style that was popular in Estonian painting during that decade and continued into the early 1970s.

A beautifully rhythmic abstracted landscape view with mountains and a lake is stylistically placed in the great freedom and flowering period of Estonian painting. Pirk demonstrates the traditional depiction of atmosphere: the painting has both a background and a foreground, and elegantly painted reflections add spatial depth to the work. A great work to illustrate the phrase “Less is more”.
