Valdur Ohakas’ female nudes painted in the 1980s can be seen as a kind of conceptual series in which the masterful painter played with different possibilities of representation. In “Dreamer”, Ohakas is engaged in a creative dialogue with Amadeo Modigliani from whose paintings he has captured the familiar pose of the model.

The artist finishes the model’s pensive face with a pinkish-red tone, making this part of the body the most eye-catching in the picture. This is how he vividly conveys the action itself – daydreaming. The dark background – a wall or drapery – is very appropriately chosen to highlight the gently glowing body in space.
