Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998) has made the brown tone an inexhaustible source of inspiration and has proven its modernity and versatility. He also does not approach still-lifes from a classical point of view but instead adds ambiguous open windows or places them in an undefined space.
Almost approaching the boundaries of abstract art, “Dinner with wine” offers a subtle and richly shaded color scheme operating in dark and light brown, with the contours of objects spontaneously added with white lines as enlivening accents. The indefinability of the space surrounding the table adds a metaphysical mystery to the still-life image – we are simultaneously in a closed room and at the same time not. This dinner with wine seems to take us somewhere far away, to a dreamy world…
