Both the female figure and the landscape play an important role in the work of Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998). Since the late 1950s, Ohakas had been searching for and experimenting with his own style in many different ways, following contemporary modernist quests for form, but these two themes remained with him throughout his work.
The painting “Evening in a coastal village” has an environment where two figures are placed only as an excuse to engage in the combination of landscape and man in a Fauvist style of painting. However, the picture also exudes the lazy fluidity and heat of midsummer. Connected to form a complete picture – even the bluish-brown figures blend smoothly into the overall green-ochre color scheme – Ohakas demonstrates his artistry and taste for color.
