Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998) drew his creative energy from the forests of Võru County in Kütiorg, where he and his wife first traveled for a long time in the late 1960s. This magically beautiful area encouraged him to notice and appreciate every part of nature, including trees and primeval forests.

The painting “Broken” speaks of the power of nature, its struggle until its last breath. A tree that has lost its top in the wind seems to raise its hands towards the luminous sky and warm sunlight – as a sign of unwavering strength, ambition and determination. In the painting, Ohakas proves his abilities as a painter very figuratively – he puts soul and life into even a simple motif. The modeling with light and shadow and the inclusion of the sky, which suggests brightness and optimism, in the narration are masterful.
