Emphasizing the natural tones of the body, this nude painting of a reclining woman is one of the greatest successes of Valdur Ohakas’ (1925-1998) late work. The title of the painting naturally refers to the depiction of the female nude in a classical pose since the Renaissance, most famously by Goya (“The Nude House”), but in Estonian art by Wiiralt in his graphic sheet “Arkeia”.
The model, with her calm, thoughtful expression, seems to represent the perfect female body but there is no frivolity in it. The abstract background of the model in its contrasting colors – blue and yellow – makes the composition even more dynamic. By adding green as a companion, the model’s background seems like a fresh park view and an open window.
