Valdur Ohakas’ (1925-1998) work, fragrant and lush in spring and summer, offers not only a feast for the eyes but also a game of thought. Can you recognize the flower varieties that the artist has arranged in a beautiful bouquet here? Daffodils, peonies and cosmos flowers form a powerful and abundant composition that lacks restraint. On the contrary, the painting, which belongs to Ohakas’ peak creative period, stands out with bold color contrasts and, at first glance, a straightforward manner of speaking.
What is interesting, however, is the artist’s perspective on the floral arrangement. An ordinary vase of flowers would be too simple an approach for one of the 1960s true art innovators. The view from above leaves the viewer with no idea of the plane supporting the bouquet, as the pastel-toned background lifts the cluster of flowers as if into the air.
