Fish with their flat form inspired Valdur Ohakas, especially in the 1960s. For him, it was not so much the faithful rendering of fish as their shape and colors that were important. The artist’s warm and dark brown is never just brown. There is purple, white, red, silver, gold and green, or everything that the brush of an artistic genius only wants to see there.

If we could say that each fish also has its own specific character, Ohakas would be able to capture this in the language of painting. These two figures look into each other’s eyes and at the viewer, their faces showing both arrogance and humility, thoughtful contemplation.
