The versatile Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998) occasionally depicted flowers in his work, which were mainly powerful bouquets when viewed from above. This composition is therefore exceptional in its genre in many ways. First of all, in terms of its perspective but on the other hand, it also represents his mythical landscapes of the 1970s. The latter were a kind of parallel to Kaljo Põllu’s “Estonian Landscapes” series. Incidentally, Ohakas was among the first to use the word “myth” so characteristic of the transavant-garde movement in his work.

Ohakas places realistically painted flowers in a night atmosphere here. The glow of moonlight makes them mystical and mysterious, as if they were unearthly plants. The painting, with its strong visual impact, is at once a simple nature study and presented as a captivating fairytale character.
