Like many of his generation, the late 1950s and early 1960s were a time of constant experimentation for Valdur Ohakas (1925-1998), inspired by cubism and surrealism. However, he remained true to his chosen deep color palette, as is the case with “A nude on burgundy fabric”.

In this piece, painted in 1961, Ohakas identifies himself as a follower of the Picasso tradition, deforming the form and modeling the figure with color. In doing so, he treats the poser’s background with a Palladian-style sensitive color but the figure itself in a more modern generalized manner, emphasizing the figure’s curves with black contour lines like a German Expressionist or a representative of the harsh style.
