The wise boulders are full of purple-gray hum.
The bold pine trunks are full of light green song.
The tireless grass is full of a speckled whisper.

Excerpt from Jaan Kross’ poem “Discovering the World”

Väino Paris’ (1921-2001) 1968 painting depicting Tagalaht in Saaremaa is one of his masterpieces. In the 1960s, his color palette became much bolder, but his brushwork continued to be lush. This is particularly evident in the expressive power of the sea waves painted in this piece and the pebbled beach sand resembling the shell of a partridge’s egg.

The high shore in the background, the crashing sea, and the pebbled surface in the foreground are connected into a compositional whole by a dynamic brushstroke, which makes the motif lively and immediate, as befits the post-impressionistic style.
