Tiina Tammetalu (b. 1961) is known today as an important abstract painter but her early piece “Little girl” represents the treatment of figural composition in the context of abstract painting. The seated figure emerging from pure, unmixed color plates is partly painted in the same abstracted style, only the legs and the face in a three-quarter turn follow a more realistic line. The design demonstrates the artist’s ability to play with form, color and surface – the figure seems to blend into its surroundings.
Tammetalu has used her sister Anneli, who can be found in several of the artist’s paintings from the 1980s, as a model for the piece. Yet, as a masterful creator, she manages to create a more generalized, universally affecting effect that depicts a young girl about to head out into the big world in a broader sense.
