Robin Nõgisto (b. 1992), today’s Akzo Nobel Prize laureate, is one of the most promising artists of the new generation, who has become a known name in neo-pop in a short time. His pieces have been presented not only in Estonia but also in many places around the world, including this painting, which was exhibited in the center of Paris in 2024 as part of the official cultural program of the Olympic Games, being the only Estonian artist to receive such a high-level opportunity.
Nõgisto’s new pop style is based on the comic-like figurative language of the USA and England, which caricatures consumerist society in a grotesque and colorful form. Nõgisto’s pictorial world largely identifies with the aesthetic preferences of today’s youth. There is a touch of sarcasm but mild and refined.
By dressing representatives of the animal kingdom in matching clothes like a uniform, the artist sends the message that individuals focused on cheap sales in giant shopping malls actually form a gray mass who, running after cheap prices, resemble animals with herd instincts.
