In the second half of the 1960s, Richard Uutmaa really got into watercolor and created bright, emotional works in both the landscape and flower painting genres. The large-format “Still-life with autumn leaves” is a perfect example of this. The design captivates the viewer with its bold and free brushwork and bright colors.

Notable, too, is Uutmaa’s use of light, elegant brushwork on the autumn tree branches and the overturned basket. It seems that all of the artist’s joy in the beauty and generosity of nature is concentrated in this watercolor. The painting is reproduced in the monograph “Richard Uutmaa. Loving Estonia” (Mai Levin, Tallinn, 2008, p. 249) and is listed in its catalogue section on page 321.
