“Sometimes it has been said that the stormy sea is my area. From the first storms in August until the ice comes, I have worked in all kinds of weather… Here I remember at least one time when we went to Karepa with Sagrits, the two Richards, to paint the sea in a strong storm. The wind was furious, we couldn’t even get the easel up. So we tied the canvases to the pine trunks and kept painting. The view was worth it!” has reminisced Richard Uutmaa (M. Soosaar “Ateljee-etüüde”, Tallinn, 1983, p. 71).

Although Uutmaa (1905-1977) often painted stormy seascapes, none of them ever lacked freshness or an immediate sense of nature. Here too, snow-white crests rise quickly and spontaneously in the midst of the dark water, each unique in its beauty that lasts only seconds.
