In the 1960s, Richard Uutmaa (1905-1977) began to paint more and more watercolor pieces alongside oil paintings – as a completely independent art form. This was related to the growing popularity of watercolor: from 1958, national watercolor exhibitions began to be organized, and Uutmaa also exhibited at the Baltic States watercolor shows organized in Riga.
Uutmaa’s watercolors were usually inspired by three main regions: Saaremaa, South Estonia, and the Northern coast. Often, the specific location even took a back seat – he was so captivated by its colors and light that he did not write about the completion of the work on the back. However, it can be assumed that later views of idyllic bays (including this one) were inspired by the beaches of Eisma, where the artist’s summer home was located.
