Richard Uutmaa (1905-1977), accustomed to the North Estonian coast, was captivated by Saaremaa with its windy beaches and rugged but resilient nature, as well as the homeliness and exoticism of island life. Uutmaa operates with two main tones on a white background – green and beige.

The lighter tones of the first convey the fresh sea breeze, and the darker ones the stubborn tenacity of the stocky junipers. With beige, however, he brings in the warmth of the sandy beach path and the sun-browned vegetation. And of course, the piece is not missing Uutmaa’s signature feature – powerfully lush clouds that repeat the tones of the lighthouses on the shore and the fresh, summery glow of the sea in the background.
