Art historian Mai Levin, who has thoroughly studied the work of Richard Uutmaa (1905-1977), has written: “In the second half of the 1960s, he really got into watercolor. From these and the following years, a number of large, brilliant works come from Saaremaa, Altja, Eisma, and South Estonia. /…/ At that time, it was already possible to get good French watercolor paper” (M. Levin “Armastades Eestimaad”, 2008, p. 206).

Uutmaa did not have to go far to find inspiration for depicting the diverse games of nature; Eisma and its neighboring villages offered endless opportunities. The color and mood of the sea could change dozens of times in a single day, and the coastal plants and trees, swaying in the wind, always offered new perspectives. It is very likely that this coastal view was created in the artist’s home village at the time, just a few hundred meters from his seaside Lahe farm.
