Richard Uutmaa (1905-1977) lived and breathed nature – the sea, the beach and the forest were inseparable companions of his life. With this exquisite watercolor painting, the artist pauses for a moment in a beautiful alley of birch trees. He is fascinated by the harmony of natural colors and the particularly crisp autumn air, the crisp vibrancy of which is well-conveyed by the light blue sky above the alley.
With sparkling halftones, he brings brightness to the painting, while with pastel colors, he adds warmth and brightness. Uutmaa has made the golden birches standing on both sides of the row communicate with each other through individual leaves fluttering in the wind. Their black and white trunks, however, play the role of creating rhythm and order in this free flight, while the darker spruces add a balancing calm.
