For Richard Uutmaa (1905-1977), a Pallas graduate, home was a refuge, family was his fortress, and nature was an endless source of inspiration. The calming roar of the sea as well as the home he later purchased next door, Eisma, and the birch and spruce forests surrounding it, remained a lasting memory for the man who grew up in a fishing village on the Northern coast.
“The way home” expresses Uutmaa’s love for everything safe, good and permanent. The view of the winding road, conveyed in soft autumn tones, and the houses awaiting the arrival of the newcomer in the distance create an intimate and warm atmosphere. Using parallel dry and wet watercolor, he highlights the versatile beauty of autumn, proving that even the gray-green-brown color scheme can be dreamily charming and romantic.
