Having begun his art studies at the Tallinn School of Applied Arts and continued them at Pallas, Richard Sagrits (1910-1968) became a remarkable painter and draftsman. Little has survived from the artist’s earlier creative period, so the ink drawing “In the stormwinds” is therefore a real treat for both admirers of Sagrits’ work and of seascapes.
It is full of emotional tension and will to live – a characteristic piece that well-conveys a situation so familiar to sailors. The graphic and painterly surfaces are in good balance, Sagrits uses ink not only to depict linear surfaces but also to cover the colored ones, recalling Rembrandt’s ink drawings. As a realist, Sagrits also pays great attention to capturing the ship’s rigging and other important details.
