Richard Sagrits (1910-1968), a Pallas graduate, knew the Northern coast like the back of his hand – he was born on the Kalame farm in the village of Karepa, and the surrounding beaches and villages were his playground. The picturesque Kunda Bay was also just a 15-minute drive away.

To convey the beauty of the region’s nature, Sagrits developed a specific color scheme, which art historian Liis Pählapuu has called the “Karepa scheme”: orange-brownish beiges, greens, and blues, which are “brought to the paintings with a particularly emphasized depth, intensity, and liveliness” (“Eyes in the Sea, Ears in the Forest”, 2024, p. 72).

The view of Kunda Bay from a high limestone cliff depicts a windy early autumn coastal landscape. The restrained color scheme is born from the above-mentioned classics, brown, blue, green and beige tones, and corresponds well to the Estonian perception of autumn weather. The light and shadow modeling adds dynamism and spatiality to both the sparse pine forest on the left and the dense deciduous forest, including a harmonious transition from the detailed foreground to the more abstract background.
