In 1954, Richard Sagrits (1910-1968) was in Crimea, in the creative base of Gurzuf, traveling and painting. A large part of the Crimean painting cycle was exhibited at his solo exhibition at the Tallinn Art Hall in 1956 of which this piece, in the catalogue under the name “Jalta. Nikitski road”, depicts a path in the shade of cypresses to the Nikita Botanical Garden.
Discovering for himself the lush Southern nature and an environment different from what he was used to, he captured the subtle contrast of light and shadow. The girls strolling on the path between the mighty cypresses and the rocky mountains seem more like a contrast that emphasizes the grandeur of nature.
