The theme of sports fascinated the virtuosic draftsman and graphic artist Richard Kaljo (1914-1978) from the very beginning of his creative path, and the woodcut piece “Football” created in 1949 perfectly illustrates his artistic abilities. The dynamic scene centers on a fight for the ball, the body language of the players vividly expresses the excitement and emotional tension of the game.
The players’ influence as the central figures of the composition is emphasized by the more sketchy depiction of the crowd in the background. The capture of the sportswear of the time also has its own value. We are celebrating the 110th anniversary of Richard Kaljo’s birth with this print, and it will be auctioned from the Richard Kaljo estate.
