This rare print by Richard Kaljo (1914-1978) is being offered to the auction audience for the first time. Signed by the artist but undated, the work can be placed in the early 1940s as indicated by the Estonian-era interior with its snail-backed chairs, round table, men’s bulky jackets and a lady’s headdress.
“At the studio” is most likely an earlier version of the piece of the same name that was completed in 1947. The studio itself also looks the same but depicted from a different angle. What kind of art is being shown to the guests who arrive at the studio remains a mystery because both the large-format catalogue and the piece on the easel are generalizations.
The entire composition is charged with psychology and mutual communication between the four people gathered in the studio. The rare print will be auctioned from the Richard Kaljo estate.
