Richard Kaljo’s (1914-1978) first drawing teachers while studying at Hugo Treffner School in Tartu were Eduard Ole and Agu Peerna. Kaljo, who entered Pallas in 1936, began studying painting and sculpture but ultimately his heart remained with graphic arts, and it was this specialty that he graduated from under Roman Vaher in 1940.

Kaljo’s depiction style carried the Palladian tradition. In his works, in addition to the subject itself, the moment it carried was important, too. Thus, in this nude, the model’s relaxed, resting pose is conveyed as if not just a nude but a glimpse of everyday life in the fifties, where time stands still…

The work is also reproduced in the book “Richard Kaljo. Free Prints in the Collections of the Art Museum of Estonia” published by KUMU in 2014.
