Renaldo Veeber (1937 -2010) graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts as a sculptor but first attracted attention with his powerful graphic prints, especially drypoints. Here, the artist was able to combine his excellent drawing skills with the sculptor’s delicate sense of form.

Veeber’s favorite themes came from his beloved Setumaa and the shores of Lake Peipus, and were often associated with the life of a fisherman. Thus, the central character of this work is a muscular, athletic expressionist male figure who is associated with the strong physical activity that fishing undoubtedly entails.

Along with the man’s expectant gaze towards the water, a more indirect narrative hidden in the picture unfolds about the early morning hours when the boat is pushed through the reeds and the nets sink quietly into the dark depths on the still-steaming surface of the water. This is the fisherman’s own secret world, a philosophy of life that speaks of simple but important pleasures and passion for their profession.
