Rein Raamat (b. 1931), who graduated cum laude in painting, is known as both a painter and as a filmmaker. In his work, he often combines both – he brings a play of light that is perfectly tuned to the canvas and involves colorful Estonian artists in his movies. Thus, under his leadership, the works of Aili Vint, Leonhard Lapin, Sirje Runge, Rein Tammik and Jüri Arrak have made their way into animated films. One of his most internationally recognized films is about Eduard Wiiralt’s “Inferno”, which also included “The Card Players”; “Cabaret” and “The Preacher”.

The pastel painting “Peonies” is a worthy representative of the long-standing genre of flower paintings. The botanically accurate painting of the flowers and the rendering of the ceramic and copper vase material are as important to Raamat as the aesthetic finish. The neutral background is naturally intended to emphasize the main object of the composition. The gloom of the pastel painting offers a wonderful opportunity to highlight the romantic undertone of the work and the lushly abundant nature of the creamy flowers.
