Rein Raamat (b. 1931) is known in Estonian painting for his landscapes, portraits and flower depictions. Hiiumaa has inspired him throughout his creative path, including for his diploma thesis in portrait painting at the Estonian State Institute of Art, which was about an Emmaste fisherman.
“Hiiumaa junipers” is an elegiac panoramic view of a yellowing grain field, stone fences and junipers, with the blue sea on the horizon. The artist reflects the surrounding colors on the junipers, stylizing them as stone sculptures carved into the coastal landscape, symbolizing the eternal vitality of wild nature. In terms of color, however, Raamat pays primary attention to developing a balanced scheme – the painting is a good example of mastering the overall brownish-beige tones.
