Raivo Korstnik (1932-1992) loved to move between different genres and styles but his color palette remained consistently warm, especially in landscapes. “Autumnal river” takes us on a coloristic adventure in the lush early autumn of Estonia, where the plants blooming on the riverbanks still exude the stunning ripeness of plants that have held on to summer with all their might.

In the piece, Korstnik has positioned himself in the middle of an unmowed natural riverbank, seemingly drowning in its voluminous jungle. But this is precisely how he gets the most honest and direct view, literally from the grassroots level, from where the river appears from a completely different angle and even merges into the embrace of the surrounding vegetation.

Only the most mature and richest colors remain on the artist’s brush, the opposite shore overlaps with gold and the flower clusters in the foreground take on a pink hue. This is a coloristically powerful sight from Raivo Korstnik, a long-time ERKI painting teacher.
