Peeter Mudist’s (1942-2013) world is a world without borders. Just as in his work, the view of the Hippodrome is only seemingly surrounded by a fence. Because everything can happen in a painting as much or as little as its creator wants. Even the size of the canvas does not limit him, because Mudist knows how to bypass its limitations and his stories live on in the space outside the picture.
Mudist paints a view of the Tallinn Hippodrome on Paldiski Road as if through a fence that seems to dissolve into the air – his gaze penetrates further than the eyes of other spectators. “Fortunately, I don’t paint what I see but what I think,” he has said. The artist, who had a close relationship with nature, painted horses walking as they want, sometimes approaching and then moving away again from the seemingly magical light in the middle of the square. Perhaps one horse is actually hiding behind another and only the artist knows that he painted another animal under the top layer. Mudist is a poetic magician whose magic can only be seen and understood by those who themselves can see it with their heart.
The work is reproduced in the catalog section of the book “Illustrated Mudist or Tobias” on page 24.
