Nature lover Peeter Mudist (1942-2013) loved to paint symbolist-magical figural compositions and hazy, pasty landscapes. His pieces created beauty through capturing ice, trees and rocks primarily because of their deeper essence, not just their form. Mudist looked, delved and discussed, finding himself in the process.
This oil painting belongs to a period in the artist’s work in which a specific or recognizable motif increasingly moves towards an abstract generalization. His most beloved, fuzzy grayish-beige color scheme has the effect of a morning veil of mist, which has covered the entire forest with its crisp breath. The artist’s attention is caught by a single stump, which he portrays as straight and slender, still standing even after the trees have fallen.
