Arnold Peeter Vihvelin (1892 – 1962) was born in Tartu County and his passion for art started at the age of six when the young boy began painting at the inspiration of his portrait painter relative. Continuing his education in various painting studios led to his successful graduation from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.

After school, Vihvelin started working in Rakvere where, in addition to his position as a drawing teacher, he continued to actively engage in painting and graphic arts. Vihvelin is a stylish art deco painter and much of his work is undated, as is this mixed media painting, which, based on a critical analysis of style, could be placed in the 1930s.

A charming couple in festive attire in the light of evening street lamps demonstrates Vihvelin’s good sense of style and composition, his excellent ability to create a party mood and also to introduce a symbolic level as the towering naked female figure on the left brings a delicate erotic accent to the picture.
