Paul Burman’s (1888–1934) special interest in depicting animals and his ability to capture their characteristic poses and movements were already evident during his studies with Ants Laikmaa in 1905–1906. He then studied in St. Petersburg with the battle painter Franz Roubaud (1907–1908) who always placed great emphasis on depicting horses. At the same time, Burman went to the zoo to draw exotic animals to expand his skillset.

Considered the leading Estonian animalist, Burman depicted animals, including dogs, both with and separately from people. This creature, probably an Eastern European shepherd, is an exciting addition to them. Burman places the dog on a patterned carpet with which he forms a picturesque whole. It is very possible that these pieces, which are similar in format, were exhibited in 1917 at the Estonian art exhibition, which was organized in Tallinn by Paul Burman’s brother, architect and watercolorist Karl Burman Sr.
