Although he started his art studies at Pallas before World War II, Osvald Lääne (1913-1990) was only able to complete them in the 1960s. The artist worked in various genres and developed a style influenced by the Art Deco of the 1930s and 1940s. “I want to paint in such a way that each of my paintings is a unique color poem,” Lääne wrote in 1973.

The painting “Three Sisters” depicting an Estonian summer scene corresponds perfectly to this principle. The painting, which belongs to the series “We Live in the Countryside”, has stylizing formal values in the foreground. The scene from a spacious farmyard gives the artist the opportunity to express a longing yet cheerful mood.

The flat forms of the landscape are conveyed in exciting horizontal rays of color and Lääne also uses the same technique in the sky. The artist pays special attention to the geometric play of color on the trees, which form a separate attraction. The piece is reproduced in Osvald Lääne’s monograph “The Forgotten Pallasian Osvald Lääne” (compiled by Tiit Lääne, 2014).
