Oskar Obst’s (1883-1945) talent for capturing the play of light in evening nature on canvas in its full maturity and depth is admirable. The artist who went to Noarootsi in 1944 to capture the famous Läänemaa sunsets, primarily conveys mood with his paintings. He approaches his creation in the same way as he approaches nature – with his heart.

Using the classical principle of dividing the surface into three, he highlights the golden glowing sky, the densely overgrown marsh landscape, the depth of which is conveyed with dense brushwork and the delicate lake in the foreground. In the latter case, he also paints a gentle breeze that moves the marsh plants and complements the feeling of a genuine natural experience.
