Oskar-Henrich Obst (1883-1945), who studied under Ants Laikmaa, painted mostly Estonian landscape motifs in a naturalistic style influenced by impressionist plein air painting. The number of his surviving works is very small and each new painting is an important addition to his creative legacy.

Evening sunset was one of Obst’s favorite times to work. In 1944, he painted in Noarootsi on the Western coast where he depicted both sea views and the shallow bog there. In an impressionistic style, he conveys a momentary mood that lasts only for a moment – the sun has already sunk so low into the sea that we can only see its intense glow on the clouds.

The quietly sleeping bog landscape itself, however, is already covered in a veil of twilight, and only from the tops of the branches reaching higher can we find the dark pink glow of the clouds. Obst transfers the delicate texture of the steaming soil between the bushes to the canvas in smoky blue while on the landscape stretching out in front, he presses a carpet of moss in brown and deep green tones with a brush densely filled with paint.
