Olev Mikiver, who studied art in both Tallinn and Tartu during the German occupation of Estonia and later improved his skills in exile in Paris in the 1950s, became one of the most renowned avant-garde authors of Estonian art abroad, working productively in various different styles.

“Sun dial”, completed in 1979, is centered around a swirling motif that encompasses the sun, a flock of birds and a forest landscape in the foreground. The structure of the painting is firmly in place and sensitive and the rapid brushwork is subordinated to the conveyance of dynamic imagery. It was for this style of work that Mikiver became well-known abroad in the 1980s.
