Modernist Olev Mikiver (1922-1994) is one of the truly undiscovered gems of our exile art. The Swedish-born artist became one of our leading avant-garde painters in the 1950s whose exciting work was full of surrealism and theatricality, rich colors and an open worldview.
As if thinking of the world-famous stone figures of Easter Island looking out to sea, Mikiver paints a cubist composition with three figures looking into the distance. The painting brings together Picasso, exotic folk art, expressionism and surrealism in harmony, aiming for a thought-provoking fantasy image.
Mikiver’s paintings also carry over the theatricality of his work – the masks seem to begin to communicate with each other. The communication is palpable, initially limited to glances at each other but it is there nonetheless. Mikiver in his most authentic form!
