Olav Maran (b. 1933) is known in Estonian painting for his flower paintings and still-lifes that offer astonishing peace and spiritual balance. Better than anyone else in Estonian art, he has expressed the transfer of metaphysical experience into visual practice for decades.
This still-life is remarkable for both its painterly style and its spiritual qualities. The red-petaled flowers seem to grow out of the picture frame and one could read a deliberate trompe-d’oeil effect from them, as if the artist had painted some of the flower petals onto the frame.
The perfectly arranged flowers leave no doubt that Maran is also interested in the compositional harmony of the piece – balance is an important category for him when establishing the structure of the painting.
