One of Tartu’s most interesting colorist painters whose work draws on the heritage of Fauvism, symbolism and pop art, is Meiu Münt (b. 1972). Münt mainly paints figures and accessories related to figures as well as portrait close-ups charged with existential tension. Dresses have received special attention in her work, one of the excellent examples of which is before us now.
Painted with a soft and sensitive brush, “White dress” carries memories of a summer day. Münt impresses: “White is again such a balancing, pure and at the same time very complex color in a painterly sense. It is easiest to make a mistake with white, it can nullify everything, turn a picture into a puddle and chalk. Operating with it is an art in itself.” (Meiu Münt, Peeter Talvistu “Meiu Münt. Red and Black”, 2020, p. 47).
As a sensitive colorist, Münt places brown and warm olive green against the background of the white dress – colors that allow the innocently pure tone of white to stand out. This is how the motif comes to life before the viewer’s eyes – both her inner and outer beauty become visible at once. Münt is an artist with a soul, under whose hands the world becomes a more beautiful place.
