Märt Bormeister (1916-1991), known for his romantically beautiful landscape paintings, always drew on impressionism and realism in his work. On the one hand, he wanted to convey the essential spirit of farmyards while on the other hand, he was immaculately precise in documenting the architecture of specific buildings.

In the work “Saaremaa in the winterimte”, the artist aims to convey the feeling of a classically snowy winter landscape as accurately as possible. On a beautiful sunny winter day, an old farm stands in deep snow like a monument to the old Estonian village and republic, but we do not see any smoke coming from the chimney – it seems that the stove was already heated earlier in the morning and the owner has gone away for a while to run errands. This is indicated by fresh footprints in the crumbly snow.
