Marko Mäetamm’s (b. 1965) stories are based on everyday situations but he almost always manages to present them in such a way that even the most serious viewer who has come to the art gallery will involuntarily turn up the corner of their mouth. “Man drinking chocolate”, which belongs to the artist’s early creative period, is a rare treat from the artist’s repertoire, who today mainly works in graphic art.

Painter Mall Nukke enjoys the bright, wholesome humor in the work, saying: “Marko’s painting about the arrogant nineties is a deliberately absurd piece. It is an everyday image on the collision line of different perceptions where the image plays with the changing worldview of transitional times. After all, people always drink either coffee or beer in a bar. A man who drinks chocolate cannot come from Soviet society, he is either a foreigner or a total do-it-yourselfer!”

Marko Mäetamm has had numerous solo exhibitions both in Estonia and abroad, and a large part of his work is also part of the collection of the Art Museum of Estonia.
