Estonian neo-pop cannot be imagined without the work of Marko Mäetamm (b. 1965) who rose like a comet into the sky of color graphics in the early 1990s. Mäetamm’s early work is inspired by the aesthetics of 1960s US pop art, but is much more generalized. Fauvist, with large, clean color surfaces, emphasizes figures with flowing forms, typical of Mäetamm. However, the essence of the place – the bar – still comes to the fore, and the customer sitting at the counter adds absurdity and irony to the development of the motif.
