We say Marju Mutsu (1941-1980) and we think sensuality, grace, surrealism, symbolism, femininity. The style and message of one of the late but most distinctive creators of Estonian graphic art are truly timeless. Mutsu’s graphic art attracted a lot of attention in the 1970s because it both openly and poetically dealt with a woman’s life from girlhood to mature middle age, and on the other hand, she was fascinated by the spontaneous and sensitive use of the etching needle and activated the white paper surface as a pictorial space.
“In the twilight” is a rare large-scale print from Mutsu that deals with the wordless communication between two women, a silent dialogue that is clearly perceptible despite the semi-nude’s turned head. As is typical of the artist, there is also much to discover in the dense web of threads behind the model in the background and on the shoulders of the first woman.
