Surrealist imagery became dominant in Estonian graphic art in the 1970s and was greatly loved by audiences and critics alike. Marju Mutsu (1941-1980) was the superstar of graphic art of that decade who could convey tenderness, longing and anticipation through her unique lyrical and poetic imagery.

Marju Mutsu’s human relationships are delicate, with things left unsaid to the end, just like in this piece – fingers (but whose? a man’s or a woman’s?) tacitly touching a woman’s face as an expression of love. And red is the color of love, which is also emphasized in the title of the piece.
